World’s Largest Horseless Carriage Museum

Visit the Remington Carriage Museum

The Remington Carriage Museum is located in the city of Cardston, in the south of the Canadian province of Alberta. With more than 250 carriages, it is the largest collection of its kind in the world.

Don Remington

The collection was started by Don Remington in 1954. His first horseless carriage was a sleigh to bring Santa to town in the Santa Claus parade. Don spent the next 33 years collecting horseless carriages from all over the world.

Buggies

A buggy is a predecessor to the automobile.

Photos should change automatically on most computers. If not, click the dots or arrows to advance to the next photo.

Coaches

A coach is a larger version of the buggy. They carry six to twelve passengers and usually have a hired driver. If the buggy was equivalent to the family car, the coach would be equal to an eight or twelve-passenger van. Wealthy people could own their coach, whereas people with fewer resources could hire one for the day. Some drove around town, picking up and dropping off passengers like a city bus.

Sleighs

During winter, sleighs replaced vehicles with wheels in places that get a lot of snow. Some were dedicated sleighs, but others could have the wheels removed and converted to sleighs for the winter.

Stagecoaches

Stagecoaches were used for intercity travel. They carried passengers as well as cargo. This one travelled between Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. Most were enclosed, but some for short trips were open-sided, like the yellow one below. Most were like the ones in western movies, but a few were reserved for first-class passengers, like the black one below.

The Remington Museum has the stagecoach used in Disney’s movie “Shanghai Noon” and Turner’s “Crossfire Trail.”

Special Purpose Wagons

Bread Wagon. Bread was delivered door to door in horse-drawn wagons like this for about 100 years, from 1850 to 1950. About 1950, they switched to motorized vehicles until about 1970.

The Studebaker company built This particular bread wagon, founded by the five Studebaker brothers in 1852. They started making automobiles in 1902. They produced both wagons and automobiles until 1919. The Studebaker company went out of business in 1967.

Milk Wagon. The milk wagon had a similar history to the bread wagon. They delivered milk, eggs, and other dairy products door-to-door. The milkman survived longer than the breadman, lasting until about 1975. This one belonged to a company called Northern Alberta Dairy Products.

School Buses

Before the invention of automobiles, children went to school in horse-drawn wagons and sometimes in sleighs during winter.

Fire Engines

Fire Engines were also horse-drawn until suitable motorized vehicles became available. Here are some photos of horse-drawn fire engines from the 1800s. These at least had a small motor to pump the water. Earlier fire wagons were hand-pumped, as shown in one of the photos below. There were also separate wagons for the ladders and hoses.

  • hand pump fire wagon

Gasoline Wagon

The invention of the automobile was followed very shortly by the necessity of setting up fuel stations. (fuel is called gasoline in North America and petrol in Europe). But how did the fuel get to the new fuel stations? Ironically, fuel was hauled to the fuel stations in horse-drawn wagons. A truck or lorry strong enough to pull the heavy wagons had yet to be invented.

Hearses

In the 1800s, a horse-drawn hearse served the same purpose as modern ones: to transport deceased people to the graveyard. Today’s hearses are plain compared to this ostentatious vehicle. Hearses in the 1800s had large windows so the public could see the person inside. Not all hearses were so elaborate. Simple ones were available if one could not afford this stylish vehicle, as shown in the photos below. There were even sleigh horses for winter conditions.

Ice Wagons

Before the invention of the refrigerator, people had an ice box in their home to keep their food cool. An icebox looked like a wooden refrigerator with no electricity attached. Like modern refrigerators, they had two compartments: one for the food and one for the ice and frozen food. The ice man travelled around town delivering large blocks of ice that people used to keep their icebox cold. The electric refrigerator was invented in the 1930s, but some people still used ice boxes in the early 1950s.

Water Wagons

Before most people had indoor plumbing, they could purchase water and have it delivered in one of these water wagons. Indoor plumbing was installed in houses in the 1830s, but only rich people could afford it. A hotel in Boston was the first hotel to feature plumbing in 1833. Also, in 1833, plumbing was installed in the White House in Washington. The average house began to install indoor plumbing in the early to mid-1900s. Farms and small rural towns were the last to get indoor plumbing, some as late as 1960. The Studebaker company made this yellow water wagon. Most were just made of unpainted wood.

The Horses

What is a horseless carriage without horses? The museum has a herd of Percherons and Quarter Horses. You can visit the stables behind the museum, but do not touch or feed the horses. You can also arrange to go for a ride in a coach.

Factory and Repair Shop

In addition to all the magnificent carriages, the museum also has a replica factory where you can see how horseless carriages were produced. You can also see a carriage dealership selling all types of carriages.

In addition, there is a real-life repair shop. This is not for display but is an actual repair shop where horseless carriages are repaired. If you own an old beat-up carriage, you could bring it here to be restored. Here, there are craftsmen who are skilled in the trade of wagon making. You can watch them at work, and they are happy to answer your questions. The museum also has a farrier to look after the horse’s hooves.

Cafe. Theatre and Gift Shop

There is a theatre where you can watch a fascinating short movie about the production of horseless carriages. After your tour, there is a nice café and gift shop where you can relax, eat or drink and purchase a souvenir before going on your way.

Summary

If you are in Alberta or planning to visit, be sure to include this world-class museum in the trip. For Americans, Cardston is located just a short drive north of the Montana border.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK IN WINTER

What to see and do in Canada’s premier winter wonderland. Updated Jun 2022

Snow Sculptures

Banff winter

Have you ever built a snowman?  Each year, in mid-January, people create spectacular, giant snow sculptures in the town of Banff.

Banff

You might encounter a Polar Bear but don’t worry; they will melt in the spring.

Banff

You will have to go to the Himalayas or Siberia to see a Snow Leopard, but in Banff, you might see a Snow Wolf.

Banff

How is this for a snowman?

Go up the Banff Springs Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain.

Banff

Take the Banff Gondola 2,281 metres (7,486 ft) to the top of Sulphur Moutain for spectacular views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.   The modern four-level building at the top of the mountain has a restaurant, a gift shop, wildlife displays, toilets, and an observation platform on the roof.   There is also a boardwalk to a nearby peak.  Be aware that the weather at the top of the mountain may not be the same as in the valley below.  It could be foggy, which spoils the view, and it might be about ten degrees colder than at the bottom, so dress warmly.   Ask at the ticket office before purchasing your ticket.

Wildlife that you might encounter includes Rocky Mountain Sheep and Canada Jays.

Banff

Hot Springs

Banff

The Banff Hot Springs is a great place to spend some time on a cold winter day.   It is cold getting in, but the water is hot, and you will feel fantastic and relaxed when you get out.   The hot springs is open all year but is best in winter.

After your swim, visit the Cave and Basin to see the original hot springs discovered in 1883.

Johnston Canyon Hike

Banff

The Johnston Canyon hike is the most popular trail in Banff National Park.  It is so popular that, in summer, the massive crowds often spoil the experience.   I have done this hike many times, but this was my first time in winter.  It is even more beautiful than summer, although it can still be crowded on weekends.

Banff

At the end of the hike, you will be rewarded by the sight of a frozen waterfall.  Something that most people will never see.   The first falls is a short 1.1 km (0.68 miles) walk.   You then have the option of turning back or going further.    The next waterfall is a little taller, and the third, the upper falls is the tallest.   From the first lower falls to the upper falls is an additional 1.6 km (one mile).  The trail to the first waterfalls is slightly uphill, but most people of average fitness can do it.  Going further to the Upper Falls is steeper and is for people with a better state of fitness.

There is waterfall climbing for people who want an adventurous winter sport other than skiing.  Sort of like mountain climbing, but these people climb up frozen waterfalls.

The Banff Springs Hotel

Banff
Banff

After a day of hiking and exploring, visit the majestic Banff Springs Hotel. Opened in 1888, this magnificent hotel is worth a visit, although expensive to stay overnight. You can enjoy an English tea time (which is a meal and not just tea) by the big windows at the back (seen in the photo above). Watch out for the ghost who died here on her wedding day in 1920.

Ice Castle at Lake Louise

Banff

Have you ever walked on water?   Frozen water, that is.  Take a walk on the icy surface of Lake Louise and get your photo taken at the ice castle.

Ice Sculptures

Banff

Check out the amazing ice sculptures at Lake Louise.  Unlike the snow sculptures, which get destroyed after the snow festival in January, the ice sculptures will be there until they melt in the spring.

Banff

Ice Skating and Cross-country skiing

Banff

Go skating or cross-country skiing on the frozen surface of Lake Louise.  Equipment is available for rent in the hotel if you do not have your own.

Horse-drawn Sleigh Rides

Banff

A horse-drawn sleigh ride along the shore of Lake Louise is fun on a snowy day.  You can purchase tickets at the hotel.  You probably will not need a reservation during the week but will need one on weekends and holidays.  The telephone number is 403-522-3511 Ext 1210.   The ticket office opens at noon on weekdays and earlier on weekends.

Riding through the forest on a two-horse open sleigh! The sleigh goes onto the lake at the midway point to turn around. So you can say you rode in a horse-drawn sleigh on a frozen lake.

BanffEat a Beaver Tail

After an exhilarating day of skating on the Ottawa canal or Lake Louise, it is time for a hot chocolate and a Beaver Tail.   You have to try this delicious and unique Canadian treat.   No, it is not a real Beaver’s tail.   It is a flat doughnut in the shape of a beaver tail.    You can get them will all kinds of toppings, but the best is still the original, which has only cinnamon and sugar on it (and it is also the cheapest one).   If you like doughnuts, you will love Beaver Tails.

Banff

Skiing and Snowboarding

The vast majority of people that you see in Banff during winter are there for skiing and snowboarding.  Some of Canada’s best ski slopes are nearby.  However, in this post, I wanted to tell you about the lesser-known winter activities.

See you there

I spend a lot of time in Banff.   It is one of my most favourite places in the whole world.  See you there!

JURASSIC CANADA – TYRRELL DINOSAUR MUSEM

The world’s best collection of Dinosaur skeletons Updated June 2022

Horseshoe Canyon

Most people think of Canada as a land of ice and snow, but if you explore a bit, you will find some surprises.

In the Canadian Arctic is the world’s smallest desert.  Just one kilometre across (0.62 mile).  Story and photos here.

Another surprise is the Canadian Badlands.   Badlands are a dry area where severe erosion of soft rock has created canyons, hoodoos and other rugged rock formations.

In addition to creating the badlands, this erosion has revealed the preserved skeletons of hundreds of Dinosaurs.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology

Tyrrell Museum

The Royal Tyrell Museum has the best collection of dinosaur skeletons in the world.  Their collection comes from the nearby badlands and totals more than 130,000 fossils.

The museum is located near the town of Drumheller, which is  135 km (84 mi) east of Calgary, Alberta.

Tyrrell Museum

Here you can get up close and personal with real specimens of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus (photo above), Triceratops, Albertosaurus and many others.

Tyrell Museum

There is even a Nichollssaura Borealis, which was a marine Dinosaur.   The skeleton is complete except for one limb lost during discovery by a large excavator.

The Dunkleosteus was a massive armoured fish 10 metres in length (32 feet 9.7 inches) and weighing as much as three elephants.   Good thing a fisherman does not have to worry about catching one of these today.   It would pull him in and have him for a snack.

You can also peek into the preparation lab, where technicians clean newly-found Dinosaur bones.

Best in the World

This is just a tiny sample of the many displays at the Royal Tyrrell Museum.   They even have a Nodosaur, which is 110 million years old and is the best-preserved Dinosaur of its kind, including the skin and insides. Many museums around the world have dinosaur skeletons. Many of them come from here. The Tyrannosaurus rex in the Museum of Natural History in New York, for example, is from here. So if you like Dinosaurs, you need to go to this museum.

COLUMBIA ICEFIELD – ATHABASCA GLACIER

Columbia Icefield – Athabasca Glacier

Updated June 2022

Athabasca Glacier

How do Glaciers Form?

Glaciers form when more snow falls during the winter than melts in summer.

The weight of new snow compresses the snow from previous years and turns it into ice. This is a prolonged process and takes more than one hundred years.

Do Glaciers Move?

They expand or retreat depending on the amount of snow and the temperature. If more snow is coming down over the years than the amount melting, the glacier will expand. This gives the appearance that it is moving. A glacier can become so massive that its weight can cause it to move down the mountain. Ice at the top of the Athabasca Glacier takes 150 years to move to the toe. The glacier will become smaller if more melting occurs than the amount replaced by new snow. This gives the appearance that the glacier has retreated.

Currently, the Athabasca Glacier is in retreat. Since 1870, it has lost 2/3 of its weight and has retreated 1.5 km  (1640 yards).   It once reached the other side of the Icefields Parkway.

How much of the world is covered by ice?

Glaciers occupy about ten per cent of the world’s total land mass, mainly in the Arctic, Antarctic, and Greenland. The total is a little less than all of South America. Canada has one per cent of the world’s glaciers.

What is an Icefield?

An icefield is a massive block of ice trapped in high mountain areas. The surrounding mountain tops hold the icefield in place and stop it from melting or moving.

The Columbia Icefield

The Columbia Icefield is held in place by the peaks of Mt Columbia, Andromeda and Kitchener. It covers about 200 sq km (77.2 sq miles) and is 250 m (820 feet) thick. The average snowfall on the icefield is 7 m (22 feet)

The Glaciers

The Columbia Icefield is the source of six glaciers named Saskatchewan, Castleguard, Dome, Stutfield, Columbia and Athabasca.

Danger

Several people have died from falling into crevasses on the Athabasca Glacier. Crevasses can be covered with light snow and not visible. Walk on the glacier only in approved areas or with an authorised guide.

Glacier Adventure

Athabasca Glacier

You can ride on the Athabasca Glacier in a special snow bus. These massive buses with giant tires and six-wheel drive were specially designed to travel on ice. The bus will stop high up on the glacier, and you can get out and walk around. (Be sure to stay within the marked area).

Athabasca Glacier

Weather on the glacier

The weather on the glacier is unpredictable and can change rapidly. It might be quite warm but could be snowing a while later. At the minimum, you should take a light jacket even on a warm day. But be prepared for colder weather. Wear sturdy shoes.

The Icefield Parkway

To get to the Athabasca Glacier, travel north from Lake Louise, Alberta or south from Jasper, Alberta, on the Icefield Parkway (Highway 93).   The glacier is located near the border of Jasper and Banff National Parks.

Athabasca Glacier

Update July 2020

I went up on the Athabasca Glacier many times in this red bus when I worked there as a guide. I took the photos of it above. In July 2020, it slid off the road and tumbled down a morain embankment, landing upside down. Three people were killed and all 24 on board were injured -14 of them seriously.

In May 2022, the company that operates the bus was charged with several offices, including failure to control hazards and failing to ensure that the bus was in safe operating condition.

An Alternative

Although the accident was a tragedy, millions of people go up on the glacier every year without incident. However, the trip is expensive and crowded, and you get to spend about 15 minutes in a confined area of the glacier where the bus stops.

An alternative is to hike from the visitor’s centre to the toe of the glacier. It is free. It is educational, as you can learn about the moraines that the glacier made and in which year it was there. Also, you can get great photos of the entire glacier from the toe that you can’t get if you are near the top.

BANFF & YOHO National Parks

Updated Jun2022

Banff National Park

Banff National Park is Canada’s first (the world’s third) National Park and is the most popular of our National Parks.

I am not going to say much about Banff.  The photos speak volumes.  I will say a few words:  “spectacular scenery” and “wildlife viewing“.

Peto Lake

Lake Peto – Banff National Park

And yes, the lake is that colour.  The photo is not altered.  When I said “spectacular scenery”, I was not exaggerating.

Vermillion Lake

Lake Louise

Beautiful Lake Louise – Banff National Park

Yoho National Park

Just across the border from Banff, in British Columbia, in Yoho National Park.  Pristine mountain lakes, hiking, canoeing, waterfalls and wildlife viewing are abundant here.

Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake – Yoho National Park

Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing opportunities abound in Banff and Yoho National Parks.  Great opportunities to photograph bears and other wild animals.  (When you get to the park, read the park brochure on wildlife.  Do not feed any animals, especially bears, and keep your distance.  These are not tame animals in a petting zoo.)

Grizzly

UNESCO

The Canadian Rocky  Mountain Parks are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you know that you will be visiting a place that “contains the most important and significant natural habitats”.

Visit Canada and our Spectacular Rocky Mountain National Parks

There are several ways to visit:

  1. By car on your own and stay in hotels.
  2. B car on your own and stay in campgrounds.
  3. On foot and go backpacking in the wilderness
  4. On an organized tour.

Tours

If you don’t want to organize the tour yourself and leave the driving to someone else, I recommend this company.  They offer all-inclusive tours, will pick you up at the airport, stay in the best hotels and eat at the best restaurants and take you to see the best sights.  All without the worries of organization, planning, driving or parking.  The tours are educational and include presentations by local experts to explain the sights, culture and wildlife.

Point Roberts

POINT ROBERTS – STRANGE EXCLAVE OF CANADA

Point Roberts is part of the USA that is accessible only through Canada. Updated Sep 2022.

Enclave or Exclave?

Point Roberts

An Enclave is a country or part of a country surrounded by another. It is not connected to the main part of the country. Nor is it an island. For example, Vatican City and San Marino are surrounded by Italy on all sides.

An Exclave is part of a country that is surrounded by other countries (more than one) or water belonging to other countries.

Point Roberts is a pene-exclave which means it is almost an enclave. Are you confused yet? This is because the surrounding water belongs to the USA (see map). Therefore, residents can cross to the mainland by boat without entering Canada, but not by land. If Canada owned the water, Point Roberts would be an enclave, meaning they must pass through another country to reach the mainland, even when travelling by boat.

The Canada – USA border

In the eastern half of North America, the Canada/USA border follows lakes and rivers from the mouth of the St Lawrence River to the Great Lakes.

In the western half of the continent, the border was drawn in a straight line at the 49th parallel from Lake of the Woods (located approximately the centre of Canada when travelling along the border) to the Pacific coast near the city of Vancouver, Canada. At this point, the border goes south around Vancouver Island so that this island remains in Canada and was not split between the two countries.

The 49th parallel happens to pass through the little Tsawwassen Peninsula. Point Roberts is on the southern side of this line, creating an American exclave attached to Canada.

If the United States were willing to move the border south of Vancouver Island, I doubt if they would have argued over this tiny peninsula that was not attached to the American mainland. I am sure that this little spec of land was overlooked by both parties when negotiating the location of the border.

American citizens travelling from the mainland USA to Point Roberts, Washington, need a passport to get there.

Facts about Point Roberts today

Population at last census (2020) – 1,191. This is down from a population of 1.314 in 2010.

Houses – 2,068 of which only 678 were occupied. The remainder are summer cottages or rental units.

Area – 4.884 sq miles ( 12.65 sq km)

Climate – cold in winter but very mild compared to the rest of the northern half of North America. January temperatures average between 43 and 30 F (6 and minus 1 Celcius).

Point Roberts School

The local school provides education up to grade three. After which, students must travel to the mainland in Washington State by bus. This involves crossing the international border between Canada and the USA four times daily. (To enter Canada, then back into the USA and then the return trip).

Medical Service

There are no doctors in Point Roberts, but there is a medical clinic with a well-trained nurse.   There is a tiny airstrip for emergencies.   The closest hospital is in Canada, but American citizens do not have access to it.   American residents need to travel to the American mainland for doctors or hospitals.

Other Services

There is a resident police officer in Point Roberts, a fire department, and representatives of the Washington Parks Department. In addition, fire departments in Canada would come to Point Roberts to assist if needed.

Economy

Point Roberts

The main economy of Point Roberts comes from Canadian tourists in the form of accommodation rentals and restaurants as well as gasoline, grocery and food purchases which are much cheaper than in Canada. Many Canadians come to Point Roberts only to fuel their vehicles, stop at the grocery store, and then head back to Canada. Some stay longer in rental cottages. Some have purchased cottages.

Point Roberts is the only place in the United States where gasoline is sold by the litre. The USA uses the Imperial system of measurements, whereby fuel is sold by the gallon (approx 4 litres). (The photo is obviously several years old. Fuel is much more expensive now. But the point is that fuel is sold by the litre instead of by the gallon as in the rest of the USA.)

Marina

Point Roberts

With a population of fewer than 1,200 people, there is a large marina with at least 300 yachts renting moorings. Canadians own many of them. Owning a boat allows American residents to reach the mainland without passing through Canada.

Birds

Bald Eagle

If you are a birder, Point Roberts is a good place to rent a cabin for a few days. Bald Eagles are common as well as many other birds, such as the Varied Thrush. In addition, it is one of the few places where you can see hummingbirds during the northern winter because the climate is so mild.

Whales

Point Roberts is one of the few places where you can see Orca Whales from land during summer. Another place is Vancouver Island in Canada.

The Tsawwassen Ferry to Victoria

Tsawwassen Ferry

Suppose you are planning to travel to the city of Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, which is located on Vancouver Island. In that case, you can travel by air or car via the Tsawwassen Ferry.   The ferry dock is closer to Point Roberts than the city of Vancouver. Therefore, if you need accommodations overnight while waiting for your ferry reservation, consider a trip to Point Roberts. It is more convenient and cheaper than staying in Vancouver.

People travelling from the British Columbia mainland to their capital city or other places on Vancouver Island do not realize that they will pass through the United States en route.   This is due to the strange way the border was drawn (see the border on the map above).

Where to stay in Point Roberts

Point Roberts

There are many places to rent in Point Roberts. My favourite is the Gingerbread Cottage.   This cute little cottage is located on the edge of a park with walking trails right behind the house. It has a nice deck on the second floor where you can watch for birds while having dinner.   Nestled in a private wooded area, we loved our stay in the Gingerbread cottage.

Contact Pat at http://lilypointparklodges.com/home/index

He also has other cottages for rent.

Add a day or two in Point Roberts to your Vancouver trip.

LORD STRATHCONA’S HORSE MUSICAL RIDE

Lord Strathcona’s Horse Musical Ride

An old Canadian Cavalry unit rides again Updated June 2022.

LDSH

Lord Strathcona’s Horse is a Canadian Army cavalry unit based in Edmonton, Alberta. The regiment was raised in 1900 to fight in the Boar War in Africa. Funding for the unit was provided by Lord Strathcona, after whom the regiment was named.

LDSH

The original recruits in 1900 were cowboys and frontiersmen from western Canada and members of the North West Mounted Police (which later became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police).   Consequently, the regiment fought on horseback in the Boar War and the First World War.

LDSH

In 1940, they traded their horses for tanks and went off to fight in the Second World War as an armoured unit. In the 1950’s they fought in the Korean War. Since then, they have served in Egypt, Cyprus, Bosnia and Afghanistan.

In 1974, a troop of horses was brought back into service to perform the musical ride. The ride was initially used as a test of the mounted soldier’s skills needed in battle. A cavalryman had to have complete control of his horse and, at the same time, had to fight with a lance or sword. Today the ride is used for ceremonial purposes to preserve the unit history and it also helps in recruiting.

The riders are real soldiers and not actors. Many of them have recently served in Afghanistan.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have a similar musical ride.
