World’s smallest desert
Where do you think you would find the World’s Smallest Desert? Take a guess. If you guessed Yukon Territory in the Canadian north you would be correct.
The Carcross desert was once the bottom of a lake that dried up 10,000 years ago. It is located 2 km from the village of Carcross (between Skagway, Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon). It is only one square mile (2.6 sq km) in size. This little desert is significantly drier than the surrounding forest. It receives only 50 cm of rain per year. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Smallest Desert.
You can walk across the whole desert and be back in Carcross in time for lunch.
The locals use the desert for having fun with off-road vehicles, which is allowed there.
Where else can you see snow-capped mountains from the middle of a desert? Where else is there a chance that you might see a bear in the desert? Bring a jacket. It is not hot in this desert.
Add the world’s smallest desert to the list of places that you have been.
