Canadian Western Arctic Guidebooks
Updated June 2022
Are you planning a trip to the Canadian Western Arctic? Here are some suggested guidebooks to help you with your plans.
The Dempster Highway Travelogue
This is a great little book. It lists everything of interest to the tourist on the Dempster Highway with the distance in kilometres from the start of the highway near Dawson. It tells you where to find rest areas, campgrounds, wildlife and viewpoints, and some history and geological information about the area. If you take only one guidebook, make it this one. It is free and available at the visitor’s centre in Whitehorse or Dawson.
Update Sept 2018: This book can now be downloaded as a PDF file (52 pages).

Canada’s Western Arctic
This book is not free, but it contains much information about the Canadian Western Arctic. It includes all the information about the Dempster Highway mentioned above and interesting information about the history, the local people and their culture. It describes hiking and canoeing, arts and crafts and music, and winter activities such as dogsledding. In addition, there is information about towns, National Parks, bird sanctuaries, historic sites, plants and wildlife and many other facts.
Arctic Wildlife
If finding wildlife is one of your primary objectives, you might want to purchase this book. It is a large book and is available at most bookstores. Try to buy it before you leave if you can, in case it is unavailable when you want one. It has everything you want to know about Arctic birds and mammals for the entire polar region, not only Canada. It contains a wealth of information, including range maps and excellent photographs. Besides birds, there are descriptions of all Arctic wildlife, including everything from Lemmings to seals and whales. ($35)
Yukon Wildlife Viewing Guide
This book will tell you where to find wildlife all over the Yukon. It is helpful if you are searching for wildlife and is free from the visitor’s centre. It is divided into sections for each highway in the Yukon so that you can quickly look up animals in your current location. There are two indexes, one sorted by area and the other by the animal’s name.
Update Dec 2019: This book can now be downloaded as a PDF file (64 pages).
