Why Straddie?

Why go to North Stradbroke Island, or Straddie, as locals affectingly call it?  Here are the top five reasons:

  • Spectacular scenery
  • Pristine, sandy beaches
  • Bird, Dolphin and Whale watching and other wildlife
  • Fishing
  • 4×4 driving on the beach

Point Lookout

Once you get onto North Stradbroke Island, head to Point Lookout at the northeast corner.  There are plenty of hotels and campgrounds, but the island is trendy in summer, so it is best to make a reservation for accommodations.   A good paved road runs from the ferry terminal to Point Lookout.

The main attraction on North Stradbroke Island is the North Gorge Walk.   This is a safe, wooden walkway with a railing along the edge of a huge cliff with spectacular views over the South Pacific Ocean.  Depending on the season, you have an excellent opportunity to see Dolphins and Whales.  (Most of the North Gorge Walk is easy, but there are a few short sections with stairs).

Wildlife

Besides Dolphins and Whales, you have a good chance to see other wildlife, including Dugongs, Sea Turtles, Wallabies, and bird life.   Keep your eye open for Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites, Pelicans and Osprey that fly along the coast.

When to go

Any time of year is good, but your holiday will depend on the weather, so check the forecast before you go. Winter can be a little chilly, too cold for swimming, but still very nice. Summers are great, but they could be crowded and accommodations full. The shoulder seasons are best.

How to get there

Getting to North Stradbroke Island is easy; from Brisbane, drive to the ferry terminal at Cleveland.   Reservations will be needed during peak periods.

Take advantage of this remarkable place to spend a few days on Australia’s beautiful east coast.
