Driving Baja California – Part Six
Updated June 2024
This is part six of the “Driving Baja California” series. Click the Travel menu at the top for the other parts.
If you like birds, consider staying an extra day in Mulege. The area abounds in birdlife. Ask a few local people for the best locations. There are lots of marsh areas. If birds do not interest you, you can move on to part seven of the Baja California tour.
The Magnificent Frigatebird is a huge bird that reminds me of a Stealth Bomber. It has a wingspan of 215 cm (85 in) and attacks other seabirds to make them regurgitate their fish. They spend days in the air and never land on the water or land, only in trees or on posts.

The Great Egret, Snowy Egret and the Little Blue Heron are wading birds that search for fish in shallow water.
Turkey Vultures and Brown Pelicans are common around Mulege.
Xantus’s Hummingbird
One extraordinary bird to look for is the Xanthus’ Hummingbird. This little hummer is found only in the southern Baja Peninsula and nowhere else. Try along the riverbank from the campground to Sombrero Island.
