Jerusalem Cricket
First of all, this animal is neither a cricket nor is it native to Jerusalem. It belongs to a family of insects called Stenopelmatus, native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They do not have wings; crickets have wings. The origin of its name is unknown, but several unproven theories exist.
In all my days of hiking in the area, I have only ever seen this one. They feed on dead plants and animals. They are not venomous but can give an excruciating bite and let off an offensive odour when threatened.
See their toes in the photo? They use their feet to dig to feed on the roots of decaying plants.
They are primarily nocturnal, which probably explains why this is the only one I have ever seen.
This is one of the reasons that I love hiking in remote areas. You never know what you might find.
