Visit the Place where the Devil Lost his Marbles
Devil’s Marbles
Updated Apr 2022
On the highway between Darwin and Alice Springs, in Australia’s Northern Territory, you will come across the place where the Devil lost his marbles. It is located 105 km south of the town of Tennant Creek.
The Devil’s Marbles is an area that looks like a giant, or the Devil, has scattered large boulders around. Most noteworthy, some of them sit precariously on top of others.
Erosion
The boulders were created by erosion. The area was originally three or four huge rocks, like smaller versions of Uluru. Over time, the rocks split into smaller rocks. With more time and erosion, the rocks acquired round or oval shapes. The erosion process continues. One round boulder has split, fairly recently, into two. Eventually, each half will be rounded into new oval-shaped boulders.
Camping
There is a small campground behind the boulders, not visible from the road. There is no power or water, but there are pit toilets. Generators are not allowed. Camping is not free. However, it costs only $3.30 per person. (Prices are subject to change) (You need the correct amount to put into the payment box). There are trails among the boulders for some interesting walks.
Sunrise and Sunset
The Devil’s marbles are worth a visit any time of day, but they are especially worth seeing at sunset and sunrise. Most Importantly, the best way to see them at this time is to spend the night at the campground. You will have to walk around the boulders to the see sunset on the other side. The sunrise can be seen right from the campground.
In conclusion, if you are travelling from Alice Springs to Darwin (or vice versa), the Devil’s Marbles is a great place for an overnight stop.
