Visit the amazing temple of the 10,000 Buddhas
Updated May 2023
While in Hong Kong, we visited the Buddhist temple of the 10,000 Buddhas. After arriving at Sha Tin by subway train, we went up Po Fook Hill for about 500 metres. The path going up the hill to the temple is lined with buddhas all along the way on both sides of the trail. The trail is part smooth and part stairs. There are 403 stairs, but not altogether, and there is also a ramp beside most of the stairs, so it is not too difficult. You will be climbing slowly and looking at all the Buddhas along the way. Each one is different from the others.
There must be almost 14,000 Buddhas at the temple of the 10,000 Buddhas. At the top, in the temple are 12,800 miniature Buddhas and some huge, painted Buddhas in this one building. No two Buddhas are alike. This does not include the many outdoor Buddhas.
Inside the temple is Yuet Kai, the founder of the monastery. When he died, he was gold-plated, made into a Buddha, and sits in the centre of the temple in a glass box.
In addition to Buddha, there are statues of several Buddhist gods. For example, Guanyin is a goddess with many arms. She is the goddess of mercy.
Kwan Yam is the goddess of compassion. She is always painted white.
Pu Xian is the god of fire and rides a white elephant.
Manjusri is a god of wisdom that rides a blue lion.
There are many other Buddhist gods. While we were there, we saw several people praying to these statues.
When in Hong Kong, a visit to the temple of the 10,000 Buddhas is definitely a required stop
