Driving Baja California – Part Seven

This is part seven of the “Driving Baja California” series. Click on the Travel menu at the top for the other parts.

Just 40 km south of Mulege is Bahia Concepcion (Conception Bay). There is nothing of particular interest in Bahia Concepcion, so few tourists stop there. However, that is part of the beauty of the place. You can camp right on the beach with the water of the Gulf of California just a few metres from your trailer. The sunsets and sunrises are spectacular, and between those two events, the night sky is a deep black with millions of stars seen without light pollution from any town.

Two photos of Bahia Concepcion.  You will have to visit for yourself to determine which is the sunrise and which is the sunset. Both are beautiful.

We spent a couple of wonderful, tranquil days here. We bought shrimp from a local fisherman and cooked them with rice and oranges. I never had oranges as part of my main course before. It was the perfect meal for a relaxing day at Bahia Concepcion. (There is no actual campground. We camped on the beach behind the hotel. The price included using the restroom in the hotel.)

The Yellow-footed Gull

Bahia Concepcion

While sitting on the beach, sipping a Corona, I noticed a Gull that seemed slightly different from the others. It looked a little larger. Upon closer examination, I found that it had all-black wings; most gulls have grey wings with black tips. It also had bright yellow legs and feet; most gulls have pink or grey legs. I looked this up in my bird book and found that it was a species of gull that I had not seen before called the Yellow-Footed Gull. They live only along the Gulf of California.

Sunrises, Sunsets, Shrimp & Cold Beer

Glorious sunrises over the bay and a gazillion stars shining down on you at night, tons of shrimp, Mexican beer, sunshine and tranquillity; what could be better? Camping costs 150 pesos (about $12 Cdn) per night, and shrimp costs 130 pesos (about $10) for a kilo of huge ones. That is enough for two days for two people. Mexico is great.
