What is Adventure Travel?

If you want to spend a week in Paris, that is not adventure travel. If you want to go canoeing in the jungle in Guatemala or travel by camel in the Sahara Desert, that is adventure travel. Spending a week in Paris is excellent. I have done it, and I highly recommend it. The cathedral and museums are extraordinary. But that is not the information you will find on this website. You simply book a flight and a hotel for those kinds of trips. Adventure travel is much more complicated, and places are often difficult to get to. These kinds of trips require a great deal of planning and research. If you have an adventurous spirit, then I hope you will find this website of use to you.

Nature and Wildlife

If you like nature and wildlife, you have come to the right place. Many of my trips are planned around National Parks and areas to find wildlife.    I have seen penguins, kiwis, sloths, pink dolphins, whales close up,  monkeys, flamingoes, three species of bears, several rare birds and many other critters. (And zoos don’t count). Besides wildlife, I travel to see nature’s splendour, such as glaciers in Alaska, and I have visited several of the world’s deserts.   This website will give you information on where to find wildlife and the world’s natural wonders. One of my greatest thrills was standing on the beach on a little island off the coast of New Zealand when two penguins came out of the water and walked past within a couple of metres of me.

Another topic that I will cover is nature and wildlife photography. After you find your critter, you will no doubt want a picture of it. We will also talk about photographing flowers and sunsets.

Culture

Another advantage of travelling off the beaten path is meeting the local people and learning about their culture.   I have met reindeer herders in Lapland, Bedouins in the Sinai Desert,  Maya Indians in the jungles of Belize, shopkeepers in the Souk in Damascus and many other interesting people.   The further off the beaten path you travel, the more interesting the people. I went to tiny villages in the far north of Finland where tourists are so rare that I was a curiosity and everyone wanted to meet me. Unfortunately, we could not speak each other’s language. Nevertheless, it was an incredible experience.
